News in Education (NIE) provides educational programs, including newspapers and teaching guides, for teachers within the newspaper's circulation area. Thanks to business and reader sponsorships, these materials are available to local classrooms at no cost.
The goal of NIE is to enrich students' education by giving them learning tools - newspapers- that are updated daily. NIE encourages students to read critically and reflectively, skills much in demand yet in serious decline.
Each school year, programs that address Massachusetts learning standards are offered to meet the educational needs of students at all grade levels. Sign up for those programs that are appropriate for your class. News in Education also offers workshops for teachers that earn you PDPs.
Getting Students Involved
NIE students get involved in public issues that help them transition
from academics to the real world. For example, during the presidential and
gubernatorial elections, students vote for the candidate of their choice after following
the issues and the candidates in the news for several weeks.
