What is News in Education (NIE) ?
News in Education (NIE) is a program committed to supporting the use of the
newspaper as a critical component in the education of students. The newspaper,
with the guidance of local schools and the Department of Education, provides
standards-based teaching materials and innovative teacher training using the most
up-to-date text – the newspaper. The newspaper provides opportunities for students
to see the real-life application of the skills and knowledge they learn in school.
Each year, thousands of students benefit from News in Education programs.
How Does It Work?
Teachers order classroom sets of newspapers on days of their choice. They sign up for
teaching materials that meet their educational objectives. Every day's newspaper
contains stories and information that lend themselves to lessons for all grade levels and
subjects. Workshops provide teachers with training in various methods of using
the newspaper as an educational resource, at the same time earning them professional
development points. In most cases, the newspapers, teaching materials and workshops
are provided at no cost to schools. Contact us to sign up for NIE or fill out the
Order Form and e-mail it.
Why Use the Newspaper?
Newspapers are
- real-life examples of the skills and concepts students are learning.
- a text that is updated daily, providing relevance to the learning process.
- readily available and easily affordable, often free to classrooms.
- informational texts that provide news about the natural, social and political world.
Who Pays for the Newspapers?
Area businesses support the News in Education program through a variety of sponsorship opportunities. Some businesses choose to sponsor a specific program, such as March Mania, making the program and accompanying newspapers free of charge for participating teachers. Others join the "Partner in Education Program" which matches them to classrooms. Many of our subscribers donate their vacation newspapers to area classrooms. Readers and businesses also donate to our "Adopt a Classroom Program". Special fundraising events such as block sales and auctions help provide the programs and newspapers at no cost.
